‘Men Get Eating Disorders Too’ is a website and
publicity campaign that aims to raise awareness of male eating disorders
(anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder) and also associated exercise
disorders (compulsive exercise and ‘Bigorexia’ – also known as muscle
dysmorphia). Our recently launched website (www.mengetedstoo.co.uk )
provides users with information and advice on eating disorders including
definitions and the symptoms, treatments and support services available.
There are also personal stories and a message board so that male users can
connect with other men with eating disorders to share their experiences and
offer peer support.

Our mission is: Raising awareness of eating disorders in men so men can
seek support.

Our aims are:

To provide information and advice about eating disorders that is specific
to men.
To enable men to contact other men who have eating disorders to ease
secrecy and isolation of their illness.
To increase knowledge, awareness and understanding of eating disorders in
men.

Beneficaries: The main users of the site are men who are/have been affected
by eating disorders. Other groups/people that will find the site useful
include friends and family members of those battling eating disorders along
with professionals in the health care field.

Background: Men with eating disorders are often sen as a minority group
mainly because of stereotypical gender assumptions being that it is
considered female only conditions – this is far from th case! The
statistics range from 10 to 25 per cent of diagnosed cases being male.
However this is a underestimate of the real number of cases as many male
sufferers feel they are unable to get help.

Support: We are being supported by ITV Fixers who have helped us build the
site, promote it and recruit volunteers. ITV Fixers is a major campaign
enabling 16-25 year old to make a media project about any issue, fixing
things for the better.
